If you switched to a tankless water heater, you already know the appeal: hot water when you need it, no tank to worry about, and a unit built to last. But in Tucson, lasting means staying ahead of the water. From Marana and Oro Valley to Rita Ranch and Green Valley, our water supply carries a mineral load that works against every water-using appliance in your home, and a tankless heat exchanger is no exception.
Unlike a tank unit where sediment settles at the bottom, scale in a tankless system builds directly inside the heat exchanger. You may not notice it right away, but the signs show up eventually: error codes on the display, reduced flow, temperature swings, and a unit that seems to be working harder than it used to. Annual descaling is how you stay ahead of it.
Rite Way’s licensed plumbers have been serving Tucson since 1959. We circulate Haymaker descaling solution through your unit, clean the inlet filter, and inspect the full system on gas and electric tankless water heaters of every brand. More than 13,000 Tucson homeowners have reviewed us on Google with a 4.9-star average.
Here is exactly what our plumber does, start to finish:
We service gas and electric tankless water heaters of any brand, so it does not matter what is installed in your home.
That’s the most common thing our plumbers hear, and it makes sense. If you have hot water, why fix what isn’t broken? The problem is that scale builds up quietly. By the time you hear rumbling or notice you’re running out of hot water sooner, the buildup has already been working against your heat exchanger for a while. Annual maintenance is about catching it while your water heater is still working fine.

Prompt, courtesy, knowledgeable. Repaired our A/C. Explained what we needed but did not pressure us to do the maintenance on our other unit. Very happy with the repairs and maintenance service. Today Brandon did several plumbing repairs for us and replaced the garbage disposal. Excellent job. Such a polite and knowledgeable young man.Posted on Google![]()

Finally upgraded the old evaporative (swamp) cooler and wall heaters to a complete cooling and heating system. I looked at several manufacturers, Lennox, Carrier, Rheem, and Trane. When I had Rite way give me a estimate I wanted to spend less however when we reviewed the coverage and the services and the maintenance plan I went with Rite way. The Trane package unit with variable speed has a great efficiency seer rating. The installation crew was awesome. Josh and Robert were excellent. So thorough and detailed. Gary the project manager was great in the set up and follow up. Thanks Gary. I was glad I went with Rite Way heating and cooling. ---- Follow up --- John came back recently because of a musty smell, turns out the REME HALO unit was the smell. John set the unit in enhanced mode and it works very good and I like the variable speed fan and capacity of this unit. Thanks John ---Additional Follow up --- 10/12/2026 I have had this unit for 5 1/2 years now. It has been working great summer and winter. Nyle Miller did the seasonal cleaning and he brought up a way to help prevent dust and dirt buildup on the fan and evaporator. They needed thorough full cleaning. We have several cats and a dog that seem to stir up the dust. The standard filter does not catch all the dust. Nyle told me about the electrostatic air filter to help keep the evap and fan clean, along with the indoor air quality benefits. He worked up a good deal for me. I accepted and he did an outstanding job. Thank you Nyle.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. There are plenty of plumbers in Tucson. Here is what homeowners find when they call us:
*Valid Until: 12/31/2023
Tucson is not a market to us. It is home. Rite Way has been working in this city since 1959, and our plumbers know its neighborhoods the way locals do: the older midtown housing stock, the newer construction out in Marana and Vail, the custom homes tucked into the Foothills. Every part of the service area is familiar territory.
Tankless water heaters have become a common choice across Tucson as homeowners look for better efficiency and longer equipment life. We have watched that shift happen and built our service capabilities around it. When your unit throws an error code or stops performing the way it should, our plumbers know exactly what to look for and why.
Our Tucson office is located at 4551 S Alvernon Way, and our phones are answered 24 hours a day. When you call Rite Way, you reach someone who actually knows this city.
Southern Arizona consistently ranks among the hardest water regions in the country, and Tucson is no exception. The city draws from two supply sources: Colorado River water moved through the Central Arizona Project and groundwater pulled from the Sonoran Desert basin. Both carry a heavy mineral load, and that load follows every gallon of water into your home.
Tankless units heat water on demand, so mineral-rich water constantly passes through the heat exchanger. As scale builds up on that surface, your unit has to work harder to reach temperature. Output drops, error codes start appearing, and if the buildup goes unchecked long enough, the heat exchanger can fail entirely. Regular maintenance helps maintain efficiency and supports a longer service life, and in Tucson, once a year is the right call.
Every descale visit includes a full inspection of the components that matter most for a tankless system:
If anything looks off, we tell you before we wrap up the visit.
Rite Way’s tankless descale service is $315. That covers the full Haymaker descale cycle, inlet filter cleaning, the complete inspection checklist above, and isolation valves if your unit doesn’t already have them.
A tankless descale takes about 60 to 90 minutes from start to finish. Whether your unit is mounted in a garage in Oro Valley or a utility closet in Rita Ranch, a little prep goes a long way:
You will be without hot water during the visit. Unlike a tank flush, there is no reheat wait once the job is done.
Isolation valves are what allow us to connect the descaling pump to your unit’s service ports without shutting off water to the rest of your home. They are also what make every future maintenance visit faster and cleaner.
Not every tankless unit is installed with them. Rite Way installs isolation valves on every unit that does not have them, so if this is your first service visit with us, we will make sure your system is properly set up before we leave.
Tucson’s hard water can push a tankless unit toward trouble faster than homeowners expect. Watch for:
If these symptoms point to something beyond routine maintenance, our tankless water heater repair team can take a closer look.
In Tucson’s hard water, most tank and tankless water heaters last about 10 to 15 years. Regular maintenance helps yours reach the longer end of that range.
Repair usually makes sense when the unit is younger and the problem is a single part, like a valve, an element, or an anode rod. Replacement is usually the better call when:
Our plumber will give you an honest read on which direction makes sense for your tankless water heater and why.
Most tankless water heaters show a code on the display when something isn’t right, and many brands have a specific code that means scale is building up in the heat exchanger. If your unit is showing a code, write it down and mention it when you call. Our plumbers check the unit’s error code history on every visit, so we can tell whether it’s a one-time hiccup or a pattern.
We recommend descale once a year for most Tucson homes. In homes with very hard water or higher-than-average hot water use, consider every 6 to 12 months.
Tucson homes with a whole-home water softener may have a bit more flexibility in the schedule, but we still recommend annual service. A sediment filter or carbon filter alone does not remove hardness, so it does not change our recommendation. If you want to know exactly what is in your water, water quality testing is a good place to start.
Most tankless water heater manufacturers recommend annual descaling, and most warranties do not cover damage caused by scale buildup. That means skipping maintenance can leave you paying out of pocket for a repair that a $315 annual visit could have prevented. Keeping up with service is the simplest way to protect both your unit and what your warranty covers.
Maintenance keeps a working tankless unit working. That means descaling the heat exchanger, cleaning the inlet filter, and checking the parts that keep it running safely. A repair fixes something that has already failed or is starting to, like a faulty sensor, a leak, or a heat exchanger damaged by years of scale.
Annual descaling is the best way to keep a maintenance visit from turning into a repair.
Before your plumber leaves, you’ll get a written summary of what they found, with photos. If everything looks good, you’ll know it. If something needs attention, you’ll have it documented so you can decide what to do on your own time.
Some homeowners look into handling this themselves, and we understand the instinct. But a tankless descale involves pressurized hoses, a chemical solution, and a sequence of steps where skipping one can cause real damage. The most common mistakes include:
A licensed plumber handles each step correctly and knows what to look for while the unit is open.
Tucson’s hard water is not going anywhere, and your heat exchanger cannot wait. Whether you are overdue for your annual service or setting up maintenance for the first time, Rite Way’s licensed plumbers are ready to help. Call us or book online today.
Rite Way’s tankless descale service is $315 and covers the full Haymaker descale cycle, inlet filter cleaning, and a complete system inspection.
We use Haymaker, a professional descaling solution that we circulate through the heat exchanger for about 45 to 60 minutes to break down mineral scale buildup.
Once a year is our standard recommendation. In homes with very hard water or high hot water demand, every 6 to 12 months is worth considering.
Not quite. A working softener can slow scale buildup and may allow a bit more flexibility, but we still recommend annual service. Filtration alone does not remove hardness.
Yes. Rite Way installs isolation valves on every tankless unit that does not have them so the system is properly set up for descaling.
The risks are real: wrong chemicals can damage the heat exchanger, pressurized hoses can pop off mid-cycle, and restoring power before purging air can cause component damage. A licensed plumber handles it correctly the first time.
Yes. Our plumbers work on gas and electric tankless water heaters of any brand throughout Tucson and the surrounding communities.
